St Joseph Cares Food Pantry is a ministry that affords you the opportunity to experience the generosity of others and support those family that are in need. The food pantry distributes food to West Milford families on scheduled Saturday mornings.
The families are comprised of senior citizens, adults and families with children. For some families the pantry is a lifeline because the food they receive at the pantry is the only food they eat for the week.
It takes many hands and skills to make the pantry a success. We welcome volunteers of all ages. Food donations can be dropped off at any time inside the door of Koch Hall. Store gift cards are always welcome.
If you are interested in a project, food drives are always appreciated. Most needed items are jelly, soup, tuna fish, mayonnaise, coffee, tea, crackers, laundry detergent and toothpaste.
Here’s what some people tell us involvement in this ministry means to them:
“It has been quite a learning experience when I see how many local families struggle to put food on their table. The average family takes for granted the meals they eat every day, however since working at the pantry I no longer take that for granted.”
“I started helping a family member at the pantry for 1 month. That has turned into once a month for over a year. I learned that a lot of West Milford residents rely on the generous people and volunteers of our town to get them through every week. It's a nice feeling to help those who need it most.”
(Youth Volunteer)..."I like volunteering at the food pantry because I've always loved helping others. When I help people in need it makes me feel better about myself, and it makes me feel like I am making some differences in the world."
(Adult Parishioner Volunteer)..."As I have been a member of St. Joseph's Parish for many years, I've always been aware that the St. Joseph's Cares Food Pantry became an established charity in the West Milford community, even from the first days of its operation. But until I began to volunteer there myself...(ashamedly, too many years later!)...I was unaware of how very well it is run, and just how dedicated all the volunteers who work there truly are. There is such a vital need for the support that is provided by this ministry. Clients are treated with dignity and respect, and their individual needs are always considered in providing supplies and services. To say that working there is a heartwarming and fulfilling experience would be an understatement. This Ministry is truly doing God's work."
